WHO IS THIS FOR?

Business owners who want to understand, without jargon, why some websites rank above others on Google.

When you search for something on Google, it isn't scanning the internet in that instant: it has a huge index, built in advance, of pages it has already visited and understood. When you type a search, its algorithm compares hundreds of signals — what each page is about, whether it loads fast, whether other sites mention it, whether visitors stay or leave right away — and ranks results by which ones it believes answer your search best. No single signal puts you first; it's the combination, sustained over time, that moves your position.

Frequently asked questions

Can I pay Google to rank higher in the regular results?

No. Organic results can't be bought; what you can pay for are ads, which are marked as such and occupy a separate space.

Why does my competitor rank above me if our websites are similar?

They've probably been working those signals — content, speed, links — for longer, or have them better resolved technically.

Does Google treat every website the same?

It applies the same general criteria, but the weight of each signal varies by search type: a local search weighs differently than an informational one.

If I update my website today, does my ranking change tomorrow?

Rarely. Google needs to re-crawl and re-index the changes, and the effect on ranking usually takes weeks.

Google doesn't reward "having SEO" like a stamp of approval. It rewards websites that answer what people are actually searching for better than the rest — SEO is the work of achieving that, not a separate trick.
